The Wilson family would like to welcome you to Beechwood Farm, located in Bucksport, Maine. Bucksport is located on the Penobscot Bay overlooking historic Fort Knox and the new Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. We are an hour from coastal Camden and Acadia National Park.
Leslie and Greg Wilson are third generation owners of Beechwood Farm. "We started out with Simmental cattle. We loved having them because of their great temperament and their looks-but boy can they eat! It sometimes was a race against mother nature to make sure we had enough hay in the barn to get us through spring to turn out. We farm approx. 100 acres with the farm sitting on 25.
Early last spring we sat down to read Hobby Farm Magazine and their cover story and feature issue was about Lowline cattle. As I read the article I realized that these were what we had been looking for all along. The article stated that Lowline cattle:
- Were designed to convert feed efficiently
- Ate one-half to one-third less than conventional cattle
- Were designed to marble on grass alone
- Are 100% Aberdeen Angus
- Had a high carcass yield average
- Could be raised in greater numbers per area than conventional cattle; where six conventional sized cattle could be raised, ten Lowline cattle could be raised resulting in more pounds per acre.
We sold our herd of Simmental within a couple of weeks and began searching the northeast for Lowlines. We will winter several bred cows and calves this year & we are looking forward to calving season next spring as it is always an exciting time.
We exhibited at several fairs this year and found that people are always interested in Lowlines and are becoming more knowledgeable about them. We were pleasantly surprised at The Blue Hill Fair this year when the judge chose Our Lowline Heifer for Reserve Grand Champion Overall which means that they are being recognized as a true competitor in the showing against conventional cattle." Beechwood Farm is proud to introduce its quality lowline cattle, perfect for large or small scale farms. We pride ourselves on our cattle and our customer service. We do not use growth hormones or sub theraputic antibiotics. We do use a wormer and we also follow a vaccination program every year for a healthy herd. Antibiotic use is rare here at Beechwood Farm but will be used if necessary.
We take a very hands on approach in raising our cattle. All of our cows are penned before calving and will remain inside for a couple of days after calving. We like to be with the cow through the whole process in case she or the calf needs help and to make sure the calf nurses in a timely manner. We will iodine dip navels at birth and ear tag and tattoo before they are turned back outside. Calving is such an exciting time we just don’t like to miss it!
Our calves will be halter started and weaned before being sold. |
